About the Independent Expert Advisory Group

On the 29 August 2014 Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon named an Independent Expert Advisory Group on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development to provide him with inputs to shape “an ambitious and achievable vision” for a future development agenda beyond 2015 to succeed the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

“The data revolution is giving the world powerful tools that can help usher in a more sustainable future,” said Mr. Ban, “The recommendations of the Group will be important inputs to the post-2015 debate and our efforts to shape an ambitious yet achievable vision.”

The Post-2015 Development Agenda refers to a UN-led process to help define the future development framework that will succeed the MDGs – globally agreed targets to fight poverty, hunger and disease, protect the environment and expand education, basic health and women’s empowerment.

The 24-member group of experts from civil society, private sector, academia, governments and international organizations is also expected to assess new opportunities linked to innovation, technical progress and the surge of new public and private data providers to support and complement conventional statistical systems and strengthen accountability at the global, regional and national levels.

The Secretary-General appointed two co-chairs: Professor Enrico Giovannini of Italy and Mr. Robin Li of China.

The group is part of the Secretary-General’s efforts to prepare a report requested by UN Member States ahead of the intergovernmental negotiations leading to the adoption of the post-2015 agenda.

The group, which is expected to submit its recommendations to the Secretary-General this fall, will advise him on measures that need to be taken to close data gaps and to strengthen national statistical capacities.
